The distinction between grammatical class and syntactic function remains the most common sticking point in middle school, and most of the available PDF sheets online are limited to labeling. Identifying a determiner in an isolated sentence does not guarantee that the student will know how to correctly agree a past participle or construct a relative clause. Working on corrected exercises of grammatical classes requires choosing materials that go beyond simple recognition to integrate syntactic manipulation.

Variable and invariable words: the preliminary sorting that the sheets neglect

Before naming an adverb or a pronoun, an effective exercise imposes a first sorting: does the word vary in gender, number, or person? This binary reflex (variable/invariable) reduces the field of possibilities and avoids recurring confusions between adjective and adverb, or between determiner and pronoun.

A well-designed exercise asks, for example, to classify “magnificent” (variable) against “magnificently” (invariable), then to justify the answer with an attempt at inflection. A student who tries to put “magnificently” in the feminine realizes the impossibility, which anchors the rule better than a definition learned by heart.

A useful correction does not simply provide the correct answer. It explains the manipulation performed: replacement, movement, deletion. Several resources, including corrected PDF exercises of grammatical classes available online, integrate this approach. Without this trace of reasoning, the student memorizes a result without understanding the mechanism.

Grammatical classes in 6th grade: aligning exercises with the new programs

The decree of April 10, 2025, modifies the expectations for French for CM1 and 6th grade starting in the 2025 school year, and for CM2 in the 2026 school year. The annual benchmarks are now more explicit, with objectives marked by level. A PDF designed before this reform may therefore present concepts in an order that no longer corresponds to the official progression.

We recommend checking three points before downloading a sheet:

  • Does the level indicated on the document correspond to the student’s class and the current school year (the CM2 programs change in 2026, not in 2025)?
  • Are the grammatical classes addressed those that the program provides for this level, or does the PDF mix concepts from different cycles?
  • Does the correction include syntactic manipulations (replacement, framing) or is it limited to simple labeling noun/verb/adjective?

A perfectly written exercise but misaligned with the program creates confusion. The student encounters terms (second object complement, detached epithet) that they have not yet studied, and the correction does not help them locate their error.

Grammatical classes exercise: moving beyond identification to production

Institutional resources emphasize a point that most PDF sheets ignore: grammatical work benefits from being linked to written production, not just analysis. Asking a student to underline adjectives in a text tests their spotting ability, not their understanding of the role of the adjective in constructing a sentence.

A more demanding exercise proposes transforming a sentence by replacing a noun phrase with a pronoun, then checking that the sentence remains grammatically correct. This type of manipulation forces the student to simultaneously mobilize the notion of class (pronoun) and that of function (subject, direct object, indirect object).

The trap of words with double grammatical class

“Orange” is a noun in “the orange is juicy” and a color adjective in “the orange color.” “Ton” can be a possessive determiner or a common noun. 9th-grade exercises systematically exploit these ambiguities to verify that the student analyzes the word in its phrasal context, not in isolation.

A quality correction explicitly indicates the distinguishing criterion. For “ton,” the question is: does the word precede a noun it determines (determiner) or does it denote a pitch (noun)? This syntax-oriented formulation is much more useful than a simple mention of “determiner” or “noun.”

Criteria for choosing a reliable PDF of corrected exercises

The quantity of sheets available online gives a false impression of abundance. Many documents repeat themselves, use the same template phrases, and offer corrections without justification. Here are the criteria that distinguish a truly usable resource:

  • Progression of exercises: the document starts with the variable/invariable sorting, then moves to class identification, and then to manipulation in context. A PDF that mixes these three levels of difficulty without order is not pedagogically structured.
  • Presence of complex sentences (relative, complement clauses) and not just simple subject-verb-complement sentences.
  • Corrections that mention the verification procedure, not just the expected answer.
  • Clear indication of the school level and, ideally, the link with the current programs.

Sheets from sites specialized in learning disabilities (like those from Dys-Positif) often offer an airy layout and reformulated instructions, making them usable by students without specific disorders but with grammatical difficulties.

One last point deserves attention: an exercise without a detailed correction has almost no value for autonomy. A student who makes a mistake without understanding why reinforces an error instead of correcting it. Before downloading, checking that the correction exists and that it goes beyond a simple list of answers remains the most profitable reflex.
